Not creative enough

I’ve always wanted to start writing a book. During my younger days, I was so much into writing stories. I had a book in which I used to write stories in the form of stick-man drawings. And there was one time when I copied down the entire dialogues from a comic book after memorising the entire plot lines. Talk about obsession. Nevertheless, my friends loved my stories and in one occasion, my friend even showed the book to our teacher (this was during my time in religious school). My teacher was equally impressed and said to me that I should start writing a book.

Fast forward to several years later I was still into creative writing but only did it sporadically. I began writing short fan-fictions that never got published anywhere (they were just sitting in my desktop’s hard drive) and cheesy love poems. Most of them were never finished because somehow I got disinterested in continuing the story lines.

Fast forward a little bit more…
I completely stopped writing stories during my final years in high school, though I kept on coming back to read my old works. I realised I could never turn my back on creative writing, even though I know how badly-written some of them were1. :p

Last year, the desire to write returned in the form of me developing the ideas for stories in my head. It usually happened while I took my showers. This normally lasted for about a week without much story development/progress before abandoning the whole thing altogether and start picking up a new plot. And all that time I never took the proper initiative to put them on papers, and instead, I continued developing the stories in my head. Most of the ideas are on epic fantasy (because, I LOVE this subgenre).

Unfortunately I do not have any qualifications in creative writing2; I never took literature lessons and the only time my work got published was in 2001: I wrote an article about the happenings in my high school and it was published in the national newspaper under the High School section.

In short, I just do not have the making of an author. I might eventually begin writing3, but it’ll be full of rehashing, plot holes and purple proses.

  1. This lasted until the desktop broke down and never got repaired
  2. I’ve read somewhere that you don’t actually need any qualifications apart from the ability to write in cohesive sentences, a thick skin, a solid work ethic and most important of all, creativity.
  3. This is an uncertain future, and nowhere can I guarantee it will happen.

I think you should give it another chance. In one of previous posts, you suggested I consider doing graphic novels. And yesterday a friend of mine and I were talking about this and what kind of material I could use for it (I can’t give out details) but I am working up on character specs. and names for them.

Maybe you should make a creative writing section here on your site and have your daily readers start there. Even expand it into DeviantArt if you want—they do have a submission for creative writing as well :)

Aww Kitty, this makes me sad. :( I know you have this mindset but I believe you can write something more. I was just the same as you, growing up as a child I loved writing and my parents liked my work, though that died as I got older and eventually I didn’t really try to go back to it, I’d just reminisce.

But last year I decided to pick things up and try again, and I started writing a novel. It was difficult getting back into it and I have always written short stories as I have problems with plots and ideas too. But you don’t have to write a book completely. You can write an anthology; you can just get a short story published, even one of your fanfictions. Even if you don’t have it “properly” and traditionally published, at least you’ll have feedback on what you write. We can often be pretty harsh on ourselves, I’m sure your writing is good and seeing what other people think, you’ll likely get some good feedback :)

Agree with the others, sounds like you’re beating yourself up before really getting into it. It also sounds exactly like the kind of things I tell myself about my writing: lack of literature grounding, focusing on my weaknesses without acknowledging my strengths. Let’s not do this to ourselves! I think you just have to START somewhere and commit to improvement, whatever criticism you get, whatever doubts you have about yourself :) Good luck!

Thank you. I think the main issue for me is where and how to start it. This has to be the hardest bit because thinking of a good start is never easy for me since I always start my stories at a later point in the stories. Hahaha!

But good luck to you too as well, if you ever indulge yourself in creative writing. :)

wahhh!! I totally can relate to this post. Hakk! It’s so like me. >:D I would always want to be an author. In fact, i’ve written a lot of fiction story, most are love story, unfortunately, none of the got finished, hakk. Same reason above there, i just felt uninterested in continuing it or maybe uninspired. :D

I could think of a story whenever im lying in my bed. Haha. But I just couldn’t put it on paper or on computer when i get up..hakk.. Simply because “maybe” i have not enough creativity. :)

    ~~

btw Kitty, it’s me Khay of cutehearts.net :)) hope you still remember me. Ahe. Haven’t been in blogsphere for quite some time. :))

Oh yes I do remember you! *hugs* Where have you been all this time. :D But I think I saw you on THMB the other day. :)

I think you should post your writings anyway, maybe create a section in your blog? That way you might be inspired to continue/work on them. :D

Don’t be silly, you’ve written a couple of fiction stories, how can that translate as not having enough creativity? :p You ARE creative girl!
Good luck with your writings! :D

No problem :) I’d love to read some of your creative writing material. It’s always interesting to see what people write about :)

The big head on my fan art drawing is actually deliberate. I wanted it to be a little big for the body, but not that much bigger.

I’ve drawn most of the characters, I just need two more. I’ll have to finish the rest maybe in the following week or so since we have guests over.
